M90U modular three-phase facility UPS

The M90U is a scalable modular three-phase online double-conversion UPS for centralized facility power protection — 15 to 60 kW at unity power factor, built from hot-swappable 15 kW or 20 kW power modules with internal modular VRLA batteries. Capacity and redundancy scale within a single enclosure, so infrastructure can grow without system replacement or initial oversizing. Designed for facilities transitioning from distributed rack-based UPS to centralized power architecture across healthcare, data center, industrial, and edge environments.

Overview

Scalable, redundant, centralized power

The M90U is a scalable modular online double-conversion UPS that protects critical data and equipment while supplying clean, network-grade power. It can be configured with a fully redundant power module and battery modules — if one module fails, the remaining modules smoothly take over the load. The power modules are independent and hot-swappable without risk to the critical load, and the platform defines a modular approach to facility infrastructure where capacity is built incrementally rather than oversized at initial deployment.

Modular architecture

Build capacity incrementally

The M90U enclosure accepts up to three hot-swappable power modules and up to twelve internal battery modules. Capacity is added as load grows — from a 15–20 kW initial install, to 30–40 kW as infrastructure expands, to a fully populated 45–60 kW system — without replacing the UPS or oversizing on day one. Redundancy is configured within the same enclosure by reserving a module.

Hot-swappable power modules — each independent power module withdraws from the front without risk to the critical load, above the control panel with graphic LCD and SNMP / USB / RS-232 communications.

N+1 redundancy, stated honestly. With one of the three module slots reserved as redundant, N+1 protected capacity reaches 40 kW (three 20 kW modules) or 30 kW (three 15 kW modules). The 60 kW and 45 kW ratings use all three slots and are non-redundant. Pair with redundant battery modules for full N+1.

Key features

What the M90U delivers

Capacity

Unity output power factor

Unity PF (kW = kVA) provides full real capacity for high-density loads — no derating of usable watts from the kVA rating.

Scalability

Hot-swappable power modules

Add 15 kW or 20 kW modules as power and runtime requirements change; modules hot-swap without risk to the critical load.

Availability

N+1 redundancy capable

Configure a redundant power module (N+1 to 40 kW on 20 kW modules, 30 kW on 15 kW modules) and redundant battery modules for the highest availability.

Efficiency

Up to 94% online, 98% ECO

Best-in-class double-conversion efficiency lowers energy consumption and heat output, reducing cooling and operating cost.

Flexibility

Dual or single utility input

Dual- or single-input configurations provide maximum installation flexibility for centralized electrical-room deployment.

Service

Integrated maintenance bypass

Manually transfer the critical load from UPS to utility power for service, with a 5.7-in graphic LCD for status and alarms.

Model selection

Capacities and module configuration

M90U is offered in two module lines — 15 kW and 20 kW power modules — each scaling across three enclosure slots. Unity power factor means the kVA and kW ratings are equal.

Model Capacity Power modules Charge current Redundancy
M90U-15 15 kVA / 15 kW 1 × 15 kW 8 A Single module
M90U-30 30 kVA / 30 kW 2 × 15 kW 16 A N+1 to 15 kW
M90U-45 45 kVA / 45 kW 3 × 15 kW 24 A Fully populated — non-redundant
M90U-20 20 kVA / 20 kW 1 × 20 kW 8 A Single module
M90U-40 40 kVA / 40 kW 2 × 20 kW 16 A N+1 to 20 kW
M90U-60 60 kVA / 60 kW 3 × 20 kW 24 A Fully populated — non-redundant

The enclosure holds up to three power modules (up to 45 kW with 15 kW modules, up to 60 kW with 20 kW modules) and up to twelve internal battery modules. N+1 protected capacity is one module below the fully populated rating; the 45 kW and 60 kW ratings are fully populated and non-redundant. Charge current scales with the populated module count (8 / 16 / 24 A).

Battery runtimes

Runtime by battery modules and load

Approximate runtime in minutes by internal battery-module count (2 to 12) and system load. Higher module counts support higher loads and longer runtime; a dash indicates that load is beyond the supported range for that battery configuration.

Battery modules System load (kW)
5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 55 60
2 modules 16 6
4 modules 37 16 9 6
6 modules 60 26 16 11 8 6
8 modules 85 37 23 16 12 9 8 6 5
10 modules 110 48 30 21 16 13 10 9 7 6 5 4
12 modules 127 60 37 26 20 16 13 11 9 8 7 6

Runtimes are approximate and vary with battery age, temperature, and site conditions. Battery life is reduced above 30°C and capacity derates above 30°C and 5,200 ft. Contact Xtreme Power at (800) 582-4524 or sales@xpcc.com for runtime sizing.

Where it fits

The entry modular facility platform

M90U is the entry modular facility UPS within centralized infrastructure environments — deployed in electrical rooms where load aggregation exceeds the capability of rack-based UPS and a centralized, scalable architecture is required. The compact M90C-6S sits a step below it for smaller modular loads. The M90U uses internal batteries for compact deployment; the M90LU shares the platform with an external-battery architecture for extended runtime, and the M90U-80 / M90U-140 extend the family to higher capacities.

How to choose

M90U vs the alternatives

Compared with How the M90U differs
Traditional fixed-capacity UPS Scales capacity and redundancy within one system, instead of being deployed at a fixed size and oversized for future growth — reducing replacement and oversizing.
M90LU (external-battery modular) Same modular platform, but internal batteries for compact, integrated deployment and standard runtime. Choose M90LU when extended runtime or flexible external battery design is needed.
Lithium UPS (e.g. Li90) A modular VRLA approach optimized for phased scalability and redundancy. Choose lithium when reduced maintenance, integrated battery design, and higher energy density are the priority.

See the lithium UPS guide for the VRLA-vs-lithium trade-off.

Upgrade path

Replace legacy APC and Eaton systems

M90U is commonly deployed to replace legacy three-phase UPS and aging modular platforms from APC and Eaton — for facilities transitioning from distributed UPS to centralized architecture, systems requiring scalable capacity and redundancy, infrastructure with growing load, and legacy UPS reaching capacity or lifecycle limits.
