APC Symmetra LX Replacement
Organizations still running APC Symmetra LX UPS systems face growing lifecycle risk. The platform is discontinued, replacement modules and battery frames are increasingly hard to source, and long-term service support is declining.
The Xtreme Power M90S modular UPS is engineered as a direct modernization path for Symmetra LX installations from 4 kVA to 16 kVA. It preserves the modular architecture LX users rely on while eliminating legacy constraints — non-unity power factor, proprietary battery frames, and limited scalability — and scales from 6 kVA to 48 kVA within a single platform. Whether you’re replacing a Symmetra LX 4000, 8000, 12000, or 16000 tower or rack system, the M90S is a supported, serviceable, scalable successor.
Why Symmetra LX systems are being replaced
Symmetra LX systems were widely deployed in IT rooms and edge environments, but the platform is now end-of-life. Organizations maintaining legacy LX installations face:
- Declining availability of power modules and battery frames
- Aging VRLA battery architectures and rising maintenance cost
- Limited usable power due to a < 1.0 power factor design
- Capacity ceilings at 16 kVA per frame
- Increasing service complexity from legacy modular electronics
Lifecycle status. The Symmetra LX platform has been discontinued and superseded by newer Schneider Electric architectures. Schneider’s own product documentation confirms the lifecycle status — see the Schneider Electric product page.
Symmetra LX vs. Xtreme Power M90S
| Capability | APC Symmetra LX | Xtreme Power M90S |
|---|---|---|
| Platform status | Discontinued | Current production |
| Power factor | < 1.0 | Unity (kVA = kW) |
| Capacity range | 4–16 kVA | 6–48 kVA |
| Scalability | Limited to frame | Expandable platform |
| Battery architecture | Proprietary frames | Modular, scalable |
| Maintenance bypass | External / frame-specific | Integrated |
| Serviceability | Aging modules | Current modular |
| Lifecycle outlook | Declining support | Long-term platform |
The M90S preserves the modular concepts that made Symmetra LX successful while modernizing electrical performance and lifecycle support.
M90S — a modern Symmetra LX successor
The M90S modular UPS family is designed specifically for Symmetra LX migration — maintaining architectural continuity while delivering improved performance and scalability.
Symmetra LX earned its place because it was modular — administrators could add power and battery modules and service them without taking the load down. The M90S keeps that operating model intact while removing the constraints that now limit LX: a derated power factor, proprietary battery frames, and a hard 16 kVA ceiling per system.
- Unity power factor (1.0). An LX frame delivered real watts well below its kVA rating; the M90S delivers watts equal to its kVA, recovering usable capacity on the same electrical service.
- Expansion to 48 kVA. Where an LX system topped out at 16 kVA, the M90S grows in 6 kW steps to 48 kVA — scale in place instead of forklifting to a larger platform.
- Hot-swappable modules. Power and battery modules are replaced live, the same serviceability LX administrators expect, without dropping the protected load.
- Integrated maintenance bypass. Bypass is built into the frame, so the UPS can be serviced or swapped without an external bypass panel or a transfer to raw utility.
- Rack or tower. The 2S deploys in a 6U rack or as a tower and the larger frames are floor-standing — covering both LX RM rack and tower installations.
- Current-production and supported. Unlike the discontinued LX, the M90S ships today with current modules, available spares, and long-term service.
Replace Symmetra LX 4000, 8000, 12000 & 16000
Many legacy deployments are referenced by capacity rather than APC part number. The M90S directly replaces the commonly searched Symmetra LX systems:
- Symmetra LX 4000 replacement UPS
- Symmetra LX 8000 replacement UPS
- Symmetra LX 12000 replacement UPS
- Symmetra LX 16000 replacement UPS
Modernize once, expand later. Unlike Symmetra LX, which was limited to 16 kVA per frame, the M90S scales to 48 kVA within a single UPS architecture — so you can grow capacity without replacing the system.
Symmetra LX RM (rack-mount) replacement
Discontinued Symmetra LX RM and RMP rack systems can be directly replaced with M90S rack-mount configurations using Xtreme Power rack kits.
The rack-mount Symmetra LX (RM) and RMP variants placed modular UPS capacity directly in IT racks. The M90S-2S drops into a 6U rack space and converts between rack and tower, so an LX RM footprint can be replaced without redesigning the rack elevation.
Unity power factor delivers full watts per kVA, recovering the headroom a derated LX RM gave up — more real load in the same rack height.
Maintenance bypass is built into the frame, so a rack UPS is serviced without an external bypass panel consuming additional rack units.
Split-phase 208/120V or 240/120V input matches typical LX RM circuits, keeping the electrical migration close to a direct swap.
Rack deployments use the Xtreme Power M90S rack-mount kit to secure the 2S and its modules in a standard 19″ rack. Where capacity outgrows a single rack frame, the floor-standing 4S, 6S, and 12S extend the same modular platform up to 48 kVA.

IT closets, wiring rooms, and edge compute sites where an LX once protected switches, servers, and storage — the compact 2S covers these without a dedicated electrical room.
Broadcast, post-production, and media systems that need clean double-conversion power for sensitive AV, encoding, and control equipment.
Telecom and network rooms on split-phase service, where continuous uptime and simple live servicing matter more than footprint.
Branch, retail, and remote facilities standardizing on one modular UPS platform and one spares pool across many locations.
Large residential technology, AV, and specialty installations that outgrew consumer UPS but do not warrant a three-phase system.
Any split-phase 208/120V or 240/120V critical load that needs unity-PF protection with room to expand in 6 kW steps.
